Q & YAY

A Monthly Music in Media Chat

Are you interested in a career as a music supervisor, or in the music industry?

Yay Team regularly gets inquiries from students, family, colleagues, friends, friends of friends, friends of friends of friends asking: How do I become a music supervisor?

To start with we’ve outlined a few potential avenues and suggestions here on the Yay Team blog that we hope are helpful!

One particular piece of advice that stands above the rest: the importance of building relationships. Both with those potentially in hiring positions and with peers. While music supervisors do often compete for jobs, on the whole the broader “music in media” community is incredibly supportive and giving. Most of the jobs we’ve gotten along the way have been through word of mouth from friends and peers. As they say, a rising tide lifts all boats.

That’s where Q & YAY: A Monthly Music in Media Chat comes in. Four aspiring music professionals will be connected with two music industry vets for a group informational interview. One vet will be a member of Yay Team, and the other will be another member of the music in media community - a fellow music supervisor, music licensing professional, music editor, composer, etc. There are so many amazing careers for those interested in pursuing music in media, our hope is to introduce you not only to people, but other opportunities to consider!

Open to students, those looking to transition careers, or anyone simply interested in learning more about music supervision, this will be a private gathering, for the attendees and guests to truly interact, ask questions and get to know each other. As with any informational interview, attendees should come prepared with questions, though the guests will have a few starting points to get the conversation going.

The other impetus behind this series is that we are very privileged to get to do this job and it’s our responsibility to use that privilege to create space for those that need it. That is why three of four spots will always be reserved for BIPOC and one spot each month will be specifically for an aspiring Black music supervisor or music professional. Participation will be completely free for all. This series will also remain virtual for the long haul; we recognize not everyone has the ability to drive long distances in the middle of the day, and we want to ensure interested parties outside of Los Angeles can join as well.

NOTE: This is not for artists or licensors looking to pitch music or answers on how to get their music heard. This is purely for those looking for professional gigs in the music in media world.
